SIERRA LEONE MISSIONS UPDATE, JANUARY – JUNE 2005 MISSIONS COORDINATOR’S REPORT
SIERRA LEONE MISSIONS UPDATE JANUARY – JUNE 2005 MISSIONS COORDINATOR’S REPORT For the past two months the Mission’s Coordinator Rev Abraham Turay was busy visiting the various Bethel Missions Stations in Sierra Leone. Within the said period, he visited Churches in Kono, Kenema, Bo, Makeni, and Lunser. Below is an update of each church. 1. Kono District Kono is the diamond rich region in the Eastern Province where Sierra Leone highly depends on for about 75% of its revenue. Paradoxically, poverty and under-development is so prevalent which has resulted to ungodliness and immoral living within the society. Bethel has a growing church and a Nursery School making tremendous impact in the lives of the people. The Church is presently meeting at the Mortema Community Center pastored by Albert Kaifineh. The Town Chief gave the Church a big piece of land and they are trusting God to start their building project in order to alleviate the unnecessary embarrassments they often face by using public buildings. This is a dare need for the Kono Church. 2. Bombali District Bombali District is the Headquarters for the Northern Province and Makeni is the main Town. Bethel now has a vibrant Church and a Vocational Training Institute for the under-privileged. Through the dynamism of the Pastor, Rev Francis Bockarie, one of the town Councilors surrendered his life to the Lordship of Jesus, and is now an active worker in that local church. They recently held the graduation of the vocational school students who received tools kits for tailoring, gara tie dyeing, catering through the sponsorship of the European Union in Sierra Leone. The church has bought a land and they are believing God for funds to start building. 3. Port Loko District Port Loko District is also a District in the Northern Province where we have two churches and schools in two of its major towns – Lunsar and Lungi respectively. 1. Lunsar Lunsar used to be popular for its iron ore and agriculture way back in the 1970s and 1980s. But due to corruption and mismanagement couple with war that lasted for ten years, the Mining Company was closed bringing Lunsar to its knees, and its citizens reduced to begging. Due to the dominance of the Roman Catholic mission in the town, almost every body depends on the Priest for their survival thus making it difficult for the people to worship freely in other churches. However, due to the sacrifices of Pastor Moses Koroma and his wife, Bethel is making a head way and people are being born again and leaving the Catholic church to Bethel without even counting the cost of the food, or scholarship they will forfeit. The church is striving and the primary school is doing very well. They have bought a land and the Evangelical Fellowship of Sierra Leone has offered to build the church. 2. Lungi Lungi is another important town in the Port Loko District where we currently have the International Airport but the town is so under-developed. Bethel bought half an acre of land through the help of Bishop Darlingston G Johnson, and has erected a temporary structure, which the church and the school is using. They are believing God to erect a permanent building for the school and church services. 4. Kenema District Kenema is the District Headquarter for the Eastern Province and is an Islamic strong hold. Bethel has made a head way through the dynamic Leadership of Rev. Francis Kamanda and his wife in Winning The Lost At All Costs. They have built a church edifice that can seat between 700 – 1000 persons. God is moving mightily and more people are getting converted. They are believing God for the finishing of the building. 5. Bo District Bo is the second largest city in Sierra Leone and the District Headquarter Town for the Southern Province. Bethel in Bo is now in the process of resurrecting and becoming alive due to some setbacks. The current Pastor, Ahmed Buanie is doing extremely well and God is doing a new thing in Bethel. |
